Released May 7, 2003

On April 14 and 15, 2003, Peter D. Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies conducted a survey among registered voters nationwide on behalf of the Pew Commission on Children in Foster Care. The research's purpose was to gauge voters' opinions of and attitudes toward the foster care system, and to determine what, if any, changes voters believe must be made to the foster care system. The sample comprises 812 randomly selected voters and carries a margin of error of +/- 3.44%.

There are some extremely useful statistics and facts to be gleaned here.

Jailed Iraqi children run free as marines roll into Baghdad suburbs
Tue Apr 8,12:30 PM ET BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 100 children held in a prison celebrated their freedom as US marines rolled into northeast Baghdad amid chaotic scenes which saw civilians loot weapons from an army compound, a US officer said.

Around 150 children spilled out of the jail after the gates were opened as a US military Humvee vehicle approached, Lieutenant Colonel Fred Padilla told an AFP correspondent travelling with the Marines 5th Regiment.

"Hundreds of kids were swarming us and kissing us," Padilla said.
"There were parents running up, so happy to have their kids back."

"The children had been imprisoned because they had not joined the youth branch of the Baath party," he alleged. "Some of these kids had been in there for five years."

Missing & Sick Children

One of the boons of the Internet is that it can be used to help those in need by spreading information quickly and widely: disseminating descriptions of missing children, raising money to treat sick children, requesting prayers for desperately ill children, helping to fulfill the last wishes of dying children.

Unfortunately, this boon has also proved to be a double-edged sword. Appeals for help get out quickly and spread widely, but they also never go away. Our inboxes continue to be clogged with messages about missing children who have long since been found or sick children who have long since recovered (or died), not to mention a plethora of missives that are nothing but mean-spirited hoaxes.

When you receive a "desperate call for help", CHECK IT OUT to see if it's real or an "Urban Legend"
